How long does it take to see my website after I change the DNS?
When you change your DNS settings for your domain, they must be sent to all DNS servers worldwide; this is known as DNS propagation. This can take up to 72 hours to fully propagate. During this time your site may appear to be up at times and down at others. It may also be visible for some and not visible for others. This will effect both the website and mail services. Please be patient while the propagation takes place, there is nothing that can be done to speed this process up.
What is a Domain Name?
A Domain Name is a web address such as www.something.com. A Domain Name is the core of your online identity. It is the address web surfers use to find your Website. Your Domain Name is yours entirely because once registered, no other party may use that identity online in that Top Level Domain.
Computers on the Internet use IP (Internet Protocol) numbers (e.g., 00.00.00.00) to locate other computers. Internet users would have a difficult time remembering these long strings of numbers to find sites, so Domain Names were developed to translate IP numbers into easy to remember Domain Names.
Typically businesses use .com, traditionally, names in .net have been used by organizations involved in Internet infrastructure activities and .org is frequently used by not-for-profit organizations.
What is a URL?
URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. In English that simply means an address; http://www.something.com
How can I get a Domain Name in .com, .net or .org?
To own your own domain name, such as www.something.com will cost you a yearly registration fee. You can purchase your domain name from QuestMatrix at a cost of $14.95 per year or you can purchase your domain name from another Registrar. You can pay for as little as a year registration or as much as a 10 year registration. These registrations have to be kept current, so you do not loose your domain name if it expires. What does it mean to Register a Domain Name?
The Internet Domain Name System (DNS) consists of a directory, organized hierarchically, of all the domain names and their corresponding computers registered to particular companies and persons using the Internet. When you register a domain name, it will be associated with the computer on the Internet you designate during the period the registration is in effect.
How long does it take for a Domain Name to be active?
Once your domain name has been registered (or transferred) it can take about 72 hours before it becomes visible to all users of the Internet. This is because all Internet Service Providers need to update their records to show the new location of your domain name. This is called propagation.
What is a Domain Email?
You can have several unique email addresses associated with your domain name such as contact@something.com.
